He was the one to press the decisive button. Werder Bremen’s general manager Klaus Allofs was in Bremen city centre on Monday morning to get the broadcasting operations of the new studio of ‘Hit-Radio Antenne Bremen 104,8’ underway. Following a countdown, the Werder man hit the red start button at 10am to get the station up and rolling.
“I’m very happy to be the first guest to appear here live. I wish our media partner all the very best,” commented the former striker, who had a Werder jersey and ball as a gift to decorate the new studio from which Werder games will be reported on.
Subsequently, as a studio guest, Allofs admitted how honoured he felt taking to the pitch at the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico: “Anyone who doesn’t suffer from some sort of stage fright in a World Cup final has just no emotions, but there it was even worse. In that heat, in front of such a massive crowd, it just wasn’t a nice feeling. Anyone who was there knows just how smothering the crowd in that arena can appear.”
O a brief foray through the curious events of his career, Allofs spoke about the outlandish training methods of the national team during that period. Allofs grinned: “We had claret coloured track suits which were absolutely all the rage. Today you could probably take them out of the closet again and they would be right back in trend. After 20 years, everything is back in fashion.”
