Whenever Werder’s midfield playmaker Diego and FIFA referee Dr. Helmut Fleischer have met up on the pitch in the Bundesliga in the past, there was always a tale to tell afterwards. Fleischer was in charge of the game in Aachen on the evening that Diego scored that unforgettable goal from 60 meters out – a strike which would win ‘Goal of the Month’ for April and then was later voted ‘Goal of the Season 2007’.
There was another memorable day this season for the Brazilian international as he scored a stunning brace in Werder’s 4:0 win over Karlsruhe SC on 10.11.2007 - and the doctor of dental medicine was in charge on that day too. Fleischer also bore witness to Diego’s wonderful lob which became ‘Goal of the Month’ in November.
The last time the two were to come face to face was to have a lasting effect on Werder’s number 10. In February 2008, Diego, under the strain of some severe provocation from both opposing fans and players, reacted angrily with a head-butt that floored Eintracht Frankfurt’s Greek international centre half Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Fleischer had little choice but to issue the red card and dismiss the Brazilian for violent conduct.
