It was one of those unforgettable strikes! Torsten Frings hammered a shot from 27,4 meters out, with 114 km/h, into the top left corner of the net as the floodlights twinkled in awe at the ‘Rostocker-Arena’ of a shot so powerful that it rebounded out of the goal with almost as much venom as it had gone in. “It was a bit of a one-off shot – the kind that you don’t hit every day. You can’t really train that sort of thing”, commented a delighted Torsten Frings on the moment when he notched up his first goal in the Bundesliga since 09.11.2006. And it was a goal that meant a lot too: “I haven’t had a good year with all my injury problems. It makes it all the better when you return to the game and then have something like that come off.”
For Frings, this was just the sense of achievement necessary as a signal that he is on his way back to his best form: “Every game is important for him now. It is clear to see that he is becoming more stable all the time. A player like Torsten would be an important element in any side”, praised Klaus Allofs. The player himself is in no doubt that he is headed in the right direction to aide Werder in the run in to the end of the season and also to play an important role for Germany at the EURO 2008: “It’s getting better for me from match to match. I am not concerned about my fitness at all. I’ve often had serious injuries and I have always managed to bounce back.”
It wasn’t just his goal that made him ‘Man of the Match’ in Rostock though. Even after the Hansa equaliser, he remained one of the most active in the Green-Whites ranks and was the man fouled when Werder won their late penalty: “A clear penalty!” in Frings opinion. “I broke free and then Clemens put through a perfect pass. I was just waiting for the right moment to get my shot away when I got a shove from behind.” The German international didn’t take on the responsibility of the spot kick himself, and the reason for that lay with his father!! “He always said that the fouled player shouldn’t take the penalty himself and I followed that rule tonight.”
