On match day 27 of the season, Werder Bremen travelled to Berlin to take on Hertha BSC and ran out eventual 2:1 (1:1) winners. In front of a 59,728 strong crowd at the Olympia Stadium, Markus Rosenberg put the Green-Whites in front with a strike in the first minute, but soon after, the hosts were back on level terms thanks to André Lima’s goal (10’). With the game heading into the final phase, German international Tim Borowski got his name on the score-sheet for the first time this season and sealed the three points for Werder (73’).
Many of the fans in the Olympia Stadium were still taking their seats as Werder launched their first attack - and it was to be a successful one. German international Clemens Fritz broke free on the right and drove a low, hard cross into the box where Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg beat Josip Simunic before converting coolly to make it 1:0.
The home side went about the business of restoring par and in the tenth minute, Czech Rudolf Skacel floated in a free-kick which found the Brazilian André Lima who was perfectly positioned to head the equaliser. The half rolled on uneventfully with the result being the sides going into the half time break locked at 1:1.
The second period saw the visitors struggle to find a way through a stout Berlin defence. Trainer Thomas Schaaf decided his side needed some fresh legs to inspire their efforts and brought Hugo Almeida for Ivan Klasnic and Mesut Özil in place of Frank Baumann.
In the 73rd minute, the changes bore fruit and the Green-Whites found reward for their efforts with what was a vital winning goal. A long ball from Torsten Frings was controlled excellently in the air by Tim Borowski who finished the move with a goal to make it 2:1 for Werder. It was to be the final goal of the match and one which saw Thomas Schaaf’s men finally notch up a win again after four successive games without one.
