Excruciating home defeat

Simply stunned! Per Mertesacker and Naldo were at the heart of the Werder defence as they suffered their second home defeat in the Bundesliga on the trot.

On match day 26, Werder Bremen tumbled to a bitterly disappointing home defeat. The Green-Whites were beaten 1:2 (0:2) by lowly MSV Duisburg at the Weser Stadium. The ‘Zebra’s’ took a two goal lead into the half time break thanks to strikes from Ivica Grlic (32’) and Mannaseh Ishiaku (42’). Werder hit back through Diego in the second period but the 58th minute goal was to prove too little for the home side on the day.

It was Werder who controlled the early phases of the game but, as has been the case all too often of late, they failed to turn their possession and superiority into goals. As is often the case, Werder were to rue their lack of effectiveness in the 32nd minute as Grlic converted a free kick from 18 meters out to make it 0:1 for the visitors.

Thomas Schaaf’s men wasted no time in going in search of an equaliser and had their best chance to draw level through a powerful Naldo free-kick from 25 meters out which whizzed just centimetres over the crossbar (38’). MSV, on the other hand, were proving much more clinical with their finishing and when a long ball was hit toward Ishiaku, the Duisburg striker took on the pass, left Naldo trailing in his wake and slotted home from 12 meters to make it 0:2.

After the break, Werder threw everything into attack and just short of the hour mark, Diego reduced the deficit (58’). The Brazilian playmaker curled in a free-kick, from way out on the left flank, which eluded both friend and foe before nestling in the back of the net - 1:2 and a boost to Green-White hopes of at least rescuing a point. Despite their efforts to force the issue though, there was to be no equalising goal for Thomas Schaaf’s men, who are now four consecutive games without a win in the Bundesliga.
