The German national team proved extremely successful in their final away game ahead of the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland. With Werder Bremen’s Per Mertesacker and Clemens Fritz in the starting eleven, in front of a 38,500 strong crowd in Basel, the DFB (German Football Federation) selection won 4:0 (1:0) against EURO 2008 co-hosts Switzerland.
The goals on the night were scored by Miroslav Klose (23’), Mario Gomez (61’/68’) and Lukas Podolski (89’). Clemens Fritz, who set up Germany’s second with a fantastic solo run, was replaced by Arne Friedrich in the 72nd minute whilst Per Merteacker was involved over the full ninety.
In the 800th international match involving Germany, trainer Joachim Löw started with Schalke 04 defender Heiko Westermann at the heart of the defence alongside Mertesacker. Clemens Fritz began wide on the right side of the midfield.
Both Werder representatives had reason to be satisfied with their performances at the end of the night and will now be looking forward to the up-coming friendlies against Belarus and Serbia.
