It was unusual to see Thomas Schaaf introducing two new strikers after just 45 minutes but in Bielefeld, the Werder coach felt the measure was a necessary one stating. “We brought in two experienced strikers in the hope that they’d have a little more luck achieving something.” It was the reaction of the trainer to the recurring situation that the team were not being rewarded for their massive efforts with goals.
Schaaf commented: “It would appear that we are seeing the continuation of what has often been the case in recent weeks - maximum effort for minimal reward. At least we got to take something from today’s game. On the whole though, there is no changing the fact we had high hopes but once again failed to get the necessary goals. We allowed Bielefeld to score with their first attack on goal, whilst, at the other end, we left too many, often very clear, chances untaken”, explained the trainer who was still clearly disappointed about Saturday’s draw.
“I really can’t accuse the team of not displaying the relevant will and determination, but the point is that we didn’t achieve what we’d planned to by just taking one point from the game. We want to, and need to, play more effectively and hopefully starting on Saturday against Duisburg”, rallied Schaaf.
