Torsten Frings could be about to return to the Werder Bremen team, just in time for the vital closing phase in the Bundesliga. Trainer Thomas Schaaf has not cancelled out the possibility of giving Frings a run-out as early as this Sunday: “Torsten and I will get together and discuss whether or not it’s time for him to get involved in a game again. In training things looked really good.” A final decision will not be made until Saturday.

As important as the return of Frings to an injury raged Werder midfield could be, Schaaf is very wary of the situation surrounding his vice-captain: “On the one hand, we have to be sure not to expect amazing things from a player who has been out of the game for such a long period but there is no question that he can help with the way he plays the game.”

The statement that was directly aimed at Torsten Frings, is applicable to the complete Werder team. Considering the strain of the last few weeks, including a draining highlight against Glasgow Rangers in the UEFA Cup which was followed by an energy sapping effort against VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, the two day break for Thomas Schaaf’s men came at just the right time: “We were able to recharge our batteries during our time off, so as we can begin turning things around again on Sunday”, commented team captain Frank Baumann on the teams regenerative break.

One dampener on the mood of optimism at Werder is the news that Daniel Jensen will not be available this Sunday (groin strain). Tim Borowski is more likely to be in a position to take part, as is striker Ivan Klasnic.
