With Per Mertesacker on a suspension after picking up a red card in Stuttgart, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was delighted to see Petri Pasanen and Frank Baumann back in the fold, with both offering alternatives at the centre of defence. The defensive duo came through the full team training session on Saturday unscathed.
Clemens Fritz also returns to the squad, for Sunday’s game against VfL Wolfsburg, having recovered from a stomach bug which had caused him problems during the week. The full-back had been forced to take a break over the last couple of days due to the effects of the virus: "I feel better again today. I am back!", said Fritz following the final pre-match session.
The participation of Tim Borowski, on the other hand, remains in doubt: "I’ve been feeling a dragging pain in my thigh", explained the midfielder who is now waiting for a consultation from the team doctor on the problem: "Should Tim have to miss out, then Peter Niemeyer could come in to fill the gap", remarked Thomas Schaaf.
The initial 18 man squad for the game is: Wiese, Vander, Naldo, Fritz, Tosic, Boenisch, Owomoyela, Pasanen, Borowski, Özil, Hunt, Harnik, Almeida, Sanogo, Rosenberg, Baumann, Vranjes, Jensen.
