Werder Bremen’s journey through European football has ended for another season. After stops in Zagreb, Madrid, Rome, Piraeus and Braga, the ‘Werder-Express’ was brought to a standstill by some staunch Scottish defending. Glasgow Rangers derailed the Green-Whites as they steamed towards the City of Manchester Stadium, where the UEFA Cup final will be held, with the 0:2 score line from the first leg proving too high a hurdle.
"We managed to do almost everything that we set out to here. We knew all along that it would be very difficult to find a chink in their armour but we did just that. We created an unbelievable number of openings but unfortunately couldn’t make use of the advantages we made for ourselves in those situations", mused trainer Thomas Schaaf.
The Scots swayed heftily at the Weser Stadium but refused to fall: "I have never experienced it here that we pinned a team back like that. Maybe they were afraid of us. Of course they had set out a defensive stall but I don’t think they’d expected to find themselves desperately clearing on 20 occasions, or that we would win 18 corners in the game. Unfortunately we couldn’t make our dominance pay. We made the decisive mistakes in Glasgow", commented Daniel Jensen.
"In the end, we just weren’t cool headed enough in front of goal and we didn’t take our chances. It is really bitter to go out of the competition after a game like that", concluded Diego, who had really gotten the Werder engines firing on all cylinders with his second half strike.
