There was massive disappointment amongst the Green-Whites late on Thursday evening. Despite their constant and forceful dominance, there was only one goal in it for Werder against Rangers. One more and the German side would have forced extra-time and on occasion there were only centimetres separating Werder from that elusive 2:0. The UEFA Cup adventure has now come to an abrupt end and complete focus can now turn to the Bundesliga. On Sunday there will be points up for grabs against VfL Wolfsburg and Thomas Schaaf’s men are determined to take all three by way of thanking the wonderful Green-White fans for their unyielding support on Thursday night: "They accept it when we pull out the stops and give our all, which is what we plan to do in the up-coming games", promised trainer Thomas Schaaf.
For all of the disappointment following the return leg against the Scots, there were plenty of positive aspects to take from the game: "Maybe we will be able to take the positive things from tonight’s game. We were able to prove that we are the better team. Rangers are sitting in their changing room still wondering how they managed to progress. After what happened in Stuttgart we really showed some team morale. The lads didn’t just have to put the result of that one behind them, but also the loss of two vital players in Clemens Fritz and Frank Baumann to illness at short notice", explained general manager Klaus Allofs, who still has his sights set on the Champions League.
Sebastian Boenisch shares the manager’s opinion: "We need to show that passion and determination to work for the rest of the team when we play in the Bundesliga. We’d have a lot of power throughout the side then. In spite of the elimination, tonight’s game makes me positive with a view to the closing phase of the season. If we continue as we did here, it will be very difficult for any team in the league to beat us."
