Werder Bremen will need at least three goals on Thursday evening, 13.03.2008, if they are to progress to the quarter final stages of the UEFA Cup - and that against an opponent that is renowned for their defensive strength. Only one team in the Scottish league has managed to score more than two goals against Rangers this season. Back in September last year, Heart of Midlothian beat the Glaswegian side 4:2.
No-one on the Weser at the moment believes that the Green-Whites will need another ‘Werder-Wonder’ to do the deed: "It would be exaggerating to start talking about needing a miracle. The situation is not optimal for us but we only have ourselves to blame for that. If we can get our game going and start the ball rolling then we could win the game two or three nil", claimed Clemend Fritz, who is convinced the Green-Whites can progress in the competition.
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was in agreement with the German international: "We don’t need a miracle. The decisive factor is how the team perform. Rangers have performed well in the league, in the Champions League and in the UEFA Cup too, but we have also seen that it is possible to score goals against them", commented a Bremen coach who strongly believes in his side’s ability: "We have played some good football too. Even on occasions when we didn’t perform well, as was the case in Glasgow, we know that we are capable of scoring several goals in a game. We have proven that in the past."
