Whilst Werder Bremen were back to the routine of the Bundesliga on Sunday, 09.03.2008, between their UEFA Cup games against Glasgow Rangers, the Scottish league leaders had a job to do in the Scottish FA Cup against FC Hibernian. Glasgow’s ‘Blues’ survived the challenge from the leagues fifth placed side and eventually ran out 1:0 winners at Ibrox Park to book a place in the quarter final stage of the competition. The winning goal on the day was scored by midfielder Chris Burke in the 39th minute. Rangers will now face Partick Thistle in the next round.

Manager Walter Smith’s side finished the game a man down after striker Nacho Novo saw red in the 80th minute for a wild two-footed lunge at an opponent which resulted in the Rangers front man being sent for an early shower.

In spite of the red card, Novo will be available to face the Green-Whites in the UEFA Cup on Thursday. Rangers will be without Daniel Cousin for the game though. The striker, who played a hand in both goals against Werder at Ibrox, will be out for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery on his jaw.
