Werder Bremen will have to make do without the services of central defender Per Mertesacker for the next two Bundesliga games.

Werder Bremen will have to make do without the services of central defender Per Mertesacker for the next two Bundesliga games. The German international was handed down the suspension by the German Football Federation (DFB) after seeing red for a foul on Mario Gomez during last Saturday’s clash between Werder and VfB Stuttgart. The ban means that Mertesacker will be unavailable on Sunday, 16.03.2008 at home to VfL Wolfsburg and on Sunday, 23.03.2008, when the Green-Whites travel to Armenia Bielefeld.

On hearing his penalty, the defender commented: "As a sportsman it is clear that you sometimes make mistakes. The decisive factor is how you deal with them, then move on and improve yourself."
