Big hearts not enough in naive Werder performance

Unfathomable for Hugo Almeida – three goals away from home and nothing to show for it!

Two bitter disappointments within 48 hours, the Green-Whites where on a low following the 3:6 defeat in Stuttgart: “That game is going to be difficult to digest. The score was far too high. We weren’t the worse side on the day but we still conceded six goals – and five of those from counter attacks”, summed up Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs at the end of 90 amazing minutes.

One word cropped up again and again after the match – ‘Naivety’. “We played football with our hearts today, but not with our intellect. We need to be a lot cleverer in many situations”, analysed Allofs.

It was pretty much of the same for trainer Thomas Schaaf, who had to watch on from the dug-out as his men collapsed in ruin: “Our play was indecisive, diffident and naive at the back. VfB punished us for that, and today they did it very well.” For all of the disappointment, the coach did see some positive points: “We got into the game well, despite the tough schedule we have at the moment, we took control and had the better of the play. Having gone behind we fought back to 2:2 and we battled hard to get back into the game when we made it 3:4. It was impressive to see how the team continually looked to push forward.”

28:9 shots on goal and 57% possession – for Werder Bremen – look statistically promising, but the points stayed in Stuttgart. Sebastian Boenisch could hardly believe the figures: “It’s difficult to find words. From ten away games that you score three goals in, you would win nine of them! The result doesn’t justify the flow of the match.” The Stuttgart players were of a similar opinion but were understandably, uninterested: “Playing against Bremen is fun every year. It’s nice to play against a side who want to play football and not just pack the defence. It’s against teams like that that you have results like this one. There are always a lot of goals”, glowed Mario Gomez. Earlier in the season it was four goals on Werder’s side and just one for VfB. That’s just how the Green-Whites would like to see it in the future.
