A 3:6 defeat in Stuttgart was without a doubt a major blow to Werder Bremen’s title dreams - in particular with Bayern cruising past Karlsruhe at the same time. For the Green-Whites though, the dream is certainly not over yet.

A 3:6 defeat in Stuttgart was without a doubt a major blow to Werder Bremen’s title dreams - in particular with Bayern cruising past Karlsruhe at the same time. For the Green-Whites though, the dream is certainly not over yet: "Of course we will continue in our plight to win the championship but after the result today, that will be very difficult", mused Daniel Jensen whilst Sebastian Boenisch remarked: "There is still a long way to go in the season and so long as we have at least a mathematical chance, we need to chase our goal. It will be a horrible trip back to Bremen, as everyone knows, but we have a good group of lads who can put that game behind them and bounce back."
General manager Klaus Allofs is of a similar opinion but he has already set his sights on another goal: "The title is not an issue for us at the moment, if we take a look at the table, it’s quite clear to see that it will be difficult enough to secure a Champions League place. We have a couple of other sides breathing down our necks." On how to shake off the challengers, Allofs said: "We need to be more disciplined at the back but that has nothing to do with changing our tactics. Do you think we intended to have three opposition players bearing down on one defender after our own corner?"
Continuing to play attractive, attacking football but not at the expense of defensive duties, is the focal point for trainer Thomas Schaaf too: "We have secured a spot among the top clubs in the Bundesliga, which means we must have been doing something right. Of course it’s risky to play open, attacking football and look to clinch every game but we can’t forget our defensive duties. We dropped three points today, which we are determined to win back in the next game, with good football and proper defensive work." Firstly though, there is the UEFA Cup return leg on Thursday against Glasgow Rangers. The plan is for a vast improvement on what occurred in Stuttgart.
