On the 23rd match day of the season, Werder Bremen crashed to a 3:6 (1:2) defeat against VfB Stuttgart in one of the games of the season. Hugo Almeida (9’), Sebastian Boenisch (60’) and Markus Rosenberg (77’) were on target for the Green-Whites. The current German champions goals were scored by Mario Gomez (20’/43’/65’), Cacau (66’/87’) and an own goal by Per Mertesacker (85’).

The game got off to a very positive start for the visitors as Hugo Almeida got on the end of a perfect cross from Markus Rosenberg to give Werder an early lead (9’). Before the break though, German international striker Mario Gomez was on target twice to swing the game back in the home sides favour (20’/43’).

In the second half, the Green-Whites raised the tempo and deservedly drew level thanks to a Sebastian Boenisch shot from 20 meters out, which took a wicked deflection off Matthieu Delpierre before beating the Stuttgart keeper (60’). For all their efforts though, there was to be no joy for Thomas Schaaf’s side at the end of another gruelling week which included a trip to Glasgow in the UEFA Cup (0:2).

In total, Werder keeper Tim Wiese was left to pluck the ball out of the back of his net on four further occasions with the stunning Mario Gomez (65’) and substitute Cacau (66’) putting the home side back in front before Markus Rosenberg managed to restore the deficit to just one goal, making it 4:3 with a well placed shot into the bottom corner (77’).

VfB Stuttgart broke away again in the 85th minute again and Ludovic Magnin danced his way through the box before flashing a ball across the face of the goal which Clemens Fritz attempted to clear but the ball rebounded into the net off Mertesacker’s legs. The lofty German international’s day was to get even worse in the 89th minute when he saw red for a professional foul on Gomez. Shortly beforehand, Cacau had made the score line 6:3 for the German champions in a game that will remain long in the memories of both sets of supporters.
