Werder Bremen were beaten 0:2 by Glasgow Rangers in the UEFA Cup last sixteen first leg tie and have left themselves with a minor mountain to climb in the return leg next week. The Scots turned the game, or at least the first half, on its head with goals just before and then just after the half time break.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made four changes to the starting eleven which beat Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last weekend with Pasanen, Baumann, Hunt and Diego, who is suspended in the league, replacing Owomoyela, Boenisch, Klasnic and Özil. The visitors from Bremen made a good start, closing down their opponents early and preventing the home side from settling into the match - all was going to plan!

Then, on the stroke of half time, Daniel Cousin broke on the left and let a shot fly from all of 30 meters out. Tim Wiese got both hands to the ball but somehow allowed it to drop over his head and behind him into the net (45’). The game was suddenly turned on its head and two minutes after the restart, things were to get even worse for the visitors. Again Wiese was involved, as he spilled a shot from Cousin and Steven Davis was able to slot the ball home effortlessly to make it 2:0 for the hosts (47’).

The Scots were satisfied with their rather unexpected lead and were quite happy to play out the rest of the tie and take the two goal aggregate advantage. Werder were clearly shocked by the double set back, taking some time to recover and attempt to rescue something from their trip to Glasgow. Unfortunately for the Green-Whites, their attacking efforts were never really proved threatening enough. Unable to force anything from the tie, Werder finished on the receiving end of a 0:2 defeat, which will not make the task in the second leg on March 13th any easier, but, with the Green-White supporters behind them at the Weser Stadium, anything is possible!
