The referee for Werder’s UEFA Cup last sixteen, first leg match against Glasgow Rangers is Alain Hamer from Luxemburg. The lofty bank consultant will take charge of his tenth UEFA Cup match and has had some previous experience with German sides. Since 2000, Hamer has refereed eight games with German involvement.
Werder’s Bundesliga opponents have notched up a total of two wins, two draws and four defeats under the watchful eye of the Luxembourger. In summer 2006, Hamer was one of the foreign referee’s to fill in for his German colleagues, who were away on a training course, during the German League Cup tournament.
Hamer has yet to referee a Werder game but he has some experience of Rangers, who were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of the last sixteen in 2006 by FC Seville with the Luxembourger in charge of the 1:1 draw in Spain - the first leg at Ibrox Park finished 2:2.
On the whole, Hamer is a very experienced referee. He has been active in the Luxemburg League since 1989 and with FIFA since 1993. Aside from his European tournament experience, Alain Hamer has also taken charge of several dozen matches in the Belgian and French national leagues. Further highlights in his career were at the Women’s World Cup in 1995 and at the Africa Cup of nations in 2004.
Alain Hamer will be supported on the sidelines by fellow countrymen Francis Crelo and Christian Holtgen. Fourth official Luc Wilmes is also from Luxemburg.
