Glasgow Rangers got through their dress rehearsal ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Cup first leg clash against Werder Bremen with flying colours and in doing so, underlined just how tough a task it will be for the Green-Whites to make it through to the quarter final stages of the competition.

On Wednesday evening, Walter Smith’s men made light work of Heart of Midlothian, eventually running out 4:0 winners thanks to two goals from Jean-Claude Darcheville before the break and a brace from Nacho Novo in the second half. On Saturday, Rangers went behind against FC Aberdeen when Stevie Lovell struck but the league leaders proved the morale within the side by bouncing back to win the tie 3:1 with goals from Christian Dailly, Charlie Adam and Kris Boyd.

The win at the weekend was the 15th in the last 16 outings for trainer/manager Smith’s men but their position in the league table hasn’t changed much as arch rivals Celtic have matched their every result. Werder’s up-coming UEFA Cup opponents have a four point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League with six games to go in the initial round of matches before the league breaks into a top and bottom six for the title and relegation play-offs.
