It would appear that Werder Bremen are capable of beating Borussia Dortmund after all! Following a 3:0 defeat in Dortmund early in the season and another 2:1 in the DFB Cup, the Green-Whites finally put one over on BVB with a 2:0 (1:0) win in front of a crowd of 42,100 at the Weser Stadium. The shining star on the day was Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg who scored both goals for Thomas Schaaf’s side (45’/63’).
The home side were the more attacking of the two in the first period but they were faced by a defensively solid Dortmund eleven. The best chance in the early phase fell to BVB’s Mladen Petric who was denied from close range by the quick reflexes of Tim Wiese (17’). At the other end, Naldo saw his 22 meter free-kick crack off the crossbar.
With many in the stadium already having settled for stalemate going into the break, the Green-Whites suddenly had reason to celebrate. Aaron Hunt slipped a pass through to Markus Rosenberg (45') and the Swedish international stuck the ball in the net to make it 1:0 and give the home side the lead.
After the break, Werder continued to control the flow of play and had any number of chances to double their lead but proved somewhat wasteful. Then in the 63rd minute, Rosenberg took on another Aaron Hunt pass and proceeded to jink through three BVB defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner, making it 2:0 and finally curing Werder Bremen’s Borussia bug.
