Those who wish to guess at who will start for Werder Bremen on Saturday, could well be in for quite a tough time of it ahead of the Borussia Dortmund game. It would probably take a clairvoyant to work that one out, with even trainer Thomas Schaaf having to wait patiently over the next couple of hours to see how the personnel situation develops.

A couple of puzzlers have been cleared up now with the result being that Tim Borowski and Martin Harnik (both ill) will not be available for selection. Since that decision was made though, the next problem has reared its head, with team captain Frank Baumann being forced to pull out of training due to a stomach bug. Trainer Thomas Schaaf admitted on Friday: "We will take him to the team hotel with us but we are going to have to make a decision as to whether or not he can play at very short notice."

The trainer went on to say: "At the beginning of the week, it looked as if we would have a 22 or 23 man squad to choose from for this game but it hasn’t quite worked out like that. That’s just how it has been for us all season so we are not going to make a song and dance about it now."

The 18 players who will be available to Thomas Schaaf on Saturday are: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Özil, Tosic, Hunt, Owomoyela, Klasnic, Sanogo, Jensen, Almeida, Mertesacker.
