The fact that many Werder fans were keeping their fingers crossed for north German rivals Hamburg SV last Sunday probably had something to do with their opponents - Bayern Munich! The game finished in a 1:1 draw, a result which could hardly have been better for the Green-Whites.
The pair sharing the spoils meant that Bayern Munich couldn’t decidedly extend their lead at the top, nor could Hamburg increase the squeeze on Werder. It would appear as if those crossed Bremen fingers did the trick: "I wouldn’t exactly consider that as ‘the luck being on our side’, but it is proof of what we have been saying from the very beginning, over the course of the season points will be dropped", remarked Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs.
The Green-Whites two horse race with their Munich rivals has long since developed into a much wider field of competitors for the throne! "Bayern have a four point lead - that’s doable, but HSV have closed the gap too", admitted Allofs. There is also Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who are on 38 points and level with Huub Stevens side, to consider. Leverkusen will also be Werder’s last opponents this season!
"It is an exciting season and I am pretty sure that it’s going to have an exciting end too", predicted Klaus Allofs with an eye on what is still to come.
