Glasgow Rangers manager Walter Smith should have been thoroughly enjoying his 60th birthday on Sunday but despite his side winning 4:2 at home to Gretna FC, and maintaining their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier league, not everything went exactly according to plan.

Glasgow Rangers manager Walter Smith should have been thoroughly enjoying his 60th birthday on Sunday but despite his side winning 4:2 at home to Gretna FC, and maintaining their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier league, not everything went exactly according to plan.

The opponents, who were just promoted last season, rose to the occasion in spite of all their woes and troubled the Glasgow side at times even though Daniel Cousin danced around the Gretna keeper to make it 1:0 after just 13 minutes and Steven Naismith doubled that lead in the 22nd.

"After we’d scored the two early goals, we looked to be on the way to a clear win", explained birthday boy Smith after the game. "Compliments to Gretna, they never gave up and battled hard for the whole 90 minutes and showed some real spirit." Late on, the visitors sent the mood at Ibrox into a dip despite Rangers being 3:0 up at the time. Kenny Deuchar (71’and 89’) grabbed a brace for Gretna, much to the displeasure of Walter Smith who had seen Kris Boyd make it 4:1 in the 88th minute: "We only did what was absolutely necessary. It was nice to have won the game but there were a number of annoying aspects."

With 25 games in the Scottish league over, Rangers hold a four point lead over arch rivals Glasgow Celtic who needed a late strike to beat lowly St. Mirren 1:0.
