Bremen cruise past Braga to set up Rangers clash

It was never much of a game at Braga’s scenic stadium but for Werder Bremen it was only ever progression that counted.

Werder Bremen put on a superior and shrewd performance to take their place amongst the last sixteen teams in this season’s UEFA Cup competition. After their clear 3:0 win in the first leg, the Green-Whites went on to beat SC Braga 1:0 in the return leg in Portugal.

With a three goal aggregate cushion, Thomas Schaaf’s men went into the tie in somewhat relaxed fashion, reducing their efforts to maintaining a steady back line early on. The visitors got a slight shock after 13 minutes when Wender flicked a shot against the post but the Portuguese side produced little to truly test Werder. In the 34th minute, Bremen had their best chance on goal in the first half when Portuguese international striker Hugo Almeida hammered a shot off the underside of the crossbar from all of thirty yards out.

Unable to find a breakthrough before half time, the hosts appeared to have thrown in the towel early on in the second period and did little to threaten Werder, who were obviously already beginning to conserve their energy with their next Bundesliga tie taking place this Saturday afternoon in Frankfurt. The move of the game saw substitute Ivan Klasnic latch on to a wonderful pass from Daniel Jensen and round the keeper before slotting into an empty net to make it 1:0 for the Green-Whites (78’).

There was more good news for Bremen in the 79th minute when summer signing Sebastian Boenisch returned to action to replace German international Tim Borowski after a five month lay-off through injury. In the end it was to prove a seldom interesting but, nonetheless, successful evening for Thomas Schaaf’s men who will now have a tricky challenge in the next round when they face Scotland’s Glasgow Ranger with a place in the quarter finals up for grabs.
