Taking a 3:0 aggregate lead from the first leg to SC Braga may appear to be a very comfortable cushion for the Green-Whites but Werder coach Thomas Schaaf is demanding the utmost in concentration and discipline from his men: "Anyone who may think he can take it easy could be in for quite a shock when he sees just how much chasing the ball he is going to have to do. The game against Ajax last year was the best example of that."
For that reason, general manager Klaus Allofs has warned: "Games are a whole lot easier when you control the tempo and have the bulk of the possession. There is always a danger when that’s not the case and we have all seen what seemed like clear first leg results in Europe being turned around. I would be very disappointed if we made this one difficult for ourselves."
With that in mind, Thomas Schaaf has already made it very clear that he will be taking no experimental chances on Thursday night: "We are going to stick to our guns and play attacking football. Firstly, it’s not in our nature to pack the defence, and secondly, doing so would give Braga the opportunity to employ their strengths - they are a strong side going forward."
Werder’s attacking options will be quite limited going into tonight’s game with Diego (taking a precautionary break due to a pubic bone inflammation) and Aaron Hunt (groin problem) not even making the trip to Portugal.
