At 4:27pm, the flash bulbs exploded into action as the gathered press representatives got the opportunity to snap Werder Bremen’s general manager Klaus Allofs signing his new contract with the club. Seconds later, club chairman Willi Lemke and his deputy, Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald put pen to paper to secure the Green-White’s future.
“In recent years with Klaus Allofs, all of our wishes have been granted both sportingly and economically. Along with Thomas Schaaf he has done some sensational work and formed an extremely successful duo", glowed Lemke. “We made him a good offer but we are also aware that not everything is possible for Werder that may be possible at other European clubs."
There were numerous lucrative offers from top clubs but for Allofs, Werder Bremen is now a matter of the heart: "It is clear to me that I have a job here which is so interesting and rare that many others would very much like to have a go at it. We have won a lot in recent years but I do feel that we haven’t yet reached our absolute maximum. I don’t exactly have the feeling that it can get no better than this."
