Thomas von Heesen (coach 1. FC Nuremberg): "We did have a strong phase during the game but didn’t take the one 100% chance that we created. When you’re playing away in Bremen, those ones just have to go in! I’m convinced that, if we’d made use of that chance, we could have taken something from the game today because Werder were not at their usual strength. The game somehow lost its value for us after the red card. Playing 70 minutes with just ten men against Bremen is very difficult."
Thomas Schaaf (coach Werder Bremen): "We never really shone today but the will to play attacking football was there over the full 90 minutes. We took the game to them, especially in the second half, and in the end deserved the win."
Per Mertesacker (defender Werder Bremen): "The red card for Nuremberg certainly worked in our favour, before that we weren’t really in the game. I almost felt sorry for FCN about the sending off, they had only played on Thursday and now over such a long period with ten men. We were never truly tested at the back and all-in-all it was a pretty dull match."
Klaus Allofs (general manager Werder Bremen): "It was clear to see today that neither side was at full strength but those are exactly the kind of games you have to win. We didn’t play brilliant, attacking football because Nuremberg closed down the space but we were very stable at the back. We were never in any danger after we’d taken the lead."
