Werder Bremen are back to winning ways! Just three days after their 3:0 win in the UEFA Cup against SC Braga, the Green-Whites took all three points on match day 20 in the Bundesliga with a 2:0 (1:0) win over 1. FC Nuremberg. The goals were scored by strikers Markus Rosenberg (30’) and Ivan Klasnic (84’).
It was the home side who set the pace from the beginning but following the sending off of Nuremberg’s Ivan Saenko with just 20 minutes played, for a second bookable offence, the Green-Whites penned their opponents back into their own half of the pitch and rarely allowed them any relief.
Thomas Schaaf’s men were rewarded for their domination on the half hour as FCN centre half Andreas Wolf failed to deal with a ball from Daniel Jensen which Markus Rosenberg pounced on and slotted past the keeper to make it 1:0.
After the break, the visitors from Nuremberg made a valid attempt to get back into the game, in spite of their personnel deficit, but opened themselves up to being hit on the break by a clearly superior Bremen side. The Werder fans had to wait until the 84th minute to see their side secure the points though. Jensen was provider once again, this time lobbing a cross over the complete FCN defence to the head of Ivan Klasnic who found the far corner with a looping header to make it 2:0. The win sees Werder pull back level on points with league leaders Bayern Munich - at least until tomorrow evening.
