He would have so much loved to have crowned his phenomenal performance with a goal and Tim Wiese looked almost pleadingly towards the bench late on as the chance presented itself, but, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf denied his keeper the opportunity to take his sides injury time penalty.
"I felt I was up to the job, that’s why I looked over to the trainer’s dugout. Klaus Allofs looked somewhat undecided and looked to the trainer himself but by then it was already too late", explained Tim Wiese but he was anything certainly not saddened.
And he had absolutely no reason to be. Instead of the chance to take the penalty, he picked up top marks from his trainer: "The two penalty saves were extremely important. Tim was just the support from the back that we needed, and not just from the spot kicks. His performances are spot on. I certainly would have had fate in him to score the penalty but there are other names ahead of his on the list."
Even without a goal of his own, the evening was an absolutely unforgettable one for Tim Wiese, who has made three vital penalty saves in just four days: "I did save two penalties once for Kaiserslautern but that was in a penalty shoot-out. I have a new trick now though. I spring around a bit on the goal line and that seems to work", grinned the 26 year old, who just minutes later commented in another interview: "I’m not going to give away the secret of my success"...Just typical Tim Wiese.
