Werder Bremen won their home tie in the round of the last 32 in the UEFA Cup in front of a 30,000 strong crowd at the Weser Stadium, beating SC Braga 3:0 to put themselves in a comfortable position for the trip to Portugal next week. The hero of the night was without a doubt Tim Weise, who pulled off the breathtaking achievement of saving two first half penalties.

German international Clemens Fritz was available to the Werder coach Thomas Schaaf for the first time since his groin operation in December and took a place in the starting eleven, as did Hugo Almeida, who was recently allowed some time off on personal grounds. The Green-Whites got off to a lightening start and with just four minutes on the clock, Brazilian centre half Naldo hammered in a free-kick from all of 30 meters out to make it 1:0.

Just five minutes later, Tim Weise had his first opportunity to shine. Clemens Fritz was judged to have felled Roland Linz in the box and the Greek referee awarded a penalty kick. The young Austrian striker took on the responsibility of the penalty himself but Weise flung himself to his left to save brilliantly. The Werder keeper was then definitively to be crowned ‘Hero’ in the 36th minute. With Werder having already taken a 2:0 lead thanks to a well placed, when slightly fortunate, Daniel Jensen strike (27’), Braga were awarded a second penalty after Wiese and Matheus tangled in the area. Jorginho stepped up to take the spot kick but again Weise was equal to it and the Werder keepers name was echoed around the stadium by the ecstatic Werder fateful.

The second half was completely dominated by the home side who never allowed their Portuguese guests to get a clear sight of the Bremen goal. It took until the fourth minute of added time but Thomas Schaaf’s men eventually managed a third. This time the penalty decision went in Werder’s favour and Hugo Almeida converted to make it 3:0 and leave Werder sitting pretty and with reason to be confident ahead of the second leg in Braga on February 21st.
