The mood amongst the Werder players was somewhat fluctuant directly after the final whistle in Munich yesterday evening. On the one hand there was a deal of pride after they’d stolen away a point from the league leaders on their own turf but, on the other hand though, the Green-Whites had made the trip to the Bavarian capital with high hopes of a win.
"We would have been satisfied with three points, but we certainly are not saddened by just the one", explained Patrick Owomoyela as he remarked on the general feeling within the team. Diego added: "We came here with the goal of winning and there was a win in it for us today. That’s why I’m not quite so happy but there were still a lot of positives things to take from the game."
On the whole, there was a distinct amount of satisfaction within the Werder ranks after what was a very disciplined display: "We were certainly in control of proceedings throughout the first half, Bayern had the upper hand in the second. A share of the points is about right", summed up captain Frank Baumann.
Those at Werder took the fact that the home sides equaliser came as the direct result of a clear foul on Daniel Jensen pretty much in their stride: "Of course it was a foul, but we’re not going to raise questions over the referee’s performance every week. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll surely have a bit more luck", rationalised general manager Klaus Allofs. From the Bremen view point though, many were not always happy about the reactions of the Bayern protagonists.
The performances of two players in particular gave grounds for optimism. Patrick Owomoyela was back on the pitch in the Bundesliga for the first time after a lengthy seven month lay-off through injury. For winter signing Mesut Özil, it was the very first appearance in the Green-White of Werder Bremen. On occasion the new man had the opportunity to show just what he is capable of but remained modest after the game: "That was okay today but I know that I can do more."
