Werder Bremen’s Brazilian duo of Naldo and Diego received late nominations to join up with their national team on Monday. At 8:45pm this Wednesday evening, the ‘Selecao’ will take on Ireland in a friendly in Dublin. The selection has thrown up some mixed emotions for Werder coach Thomas Schaaf: "It makes no difference whether I think it’s a good thing or not. I would have liked to have them both here training." The trainer will have to wait now until Thursday for the pair to return.
Until then, the Green-Whites coach will also be without striker Ivan Klasnic. The Croatian injured his left foot in training last Wednesday and has been out of the reckoning since then. The front man explained on Monday: "The capsule is damaged which has caused the foot to swell. I would like to be fit in time for the Bayern game but I will have to see if I can train without feeling any pain before then", said Klasnic.
Werder are hoping to have Clemens Fritz (groin operation) and Sebastian Boenisch (knee injury) back in the fold again soon. Both continued their rehabilitation programmes with physio Stefan Wolters on Monday. Whilst Boenisch will have to be a little more patient – "I still feel some pain from time to time", - Fritz expects to be back in full team training by the weekend.
This morning, the only four Werder first team players on the training pitch were Christian Vander, Kevin Artmann, Patrick Owomoyela and Nico Pellatz.
