The game against VfL Bochum was not just frustrating due to the points that were dropped. The game was the conclusion of a week which held two defeats and severely dented the optimism of the Werder fans with a trip to take on Bayern Munich looming. All that said, there was no-one in Bremen discussing a botched re-start just yet.
"It is only a ‘Botched Start’ if you understand that to mean that a game has been lost. I don’t see it that way. It was the second home defeat of the season and we can’t expect to win all 17 games that we play here", said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.
General manager Klaus Allofs now sees the up-coming clash with league leaders Bayern Munich as being a challenge: "We now have a wonderful match ahead of us, in which he want to avoid a third defeat in succession at all costs. It’s not as if we are going there with absolutely no chance to taking any points."
The Werder players are also convinced that they are still in the race despite the set-back at the weekend. Shortly after the game on Sunday, Daniel Jensen stated: "We have absolutely no need to fear a ‘Botched Start’. Everyone, who saw that game, knows that we will notch up our successes."
