It was the last friendly game for Thomas Schaaf and his men before the season starts again for real with the DFB Cup clash against Borussia Dortmund next Tuesday. Tonight’s game in Split was the dress rehearsal for a game which could prove vital for both sides, which made it all the more important that Werder once again had midfield playmaker Diego back in the fold. The game against Hajduk Split was the little Brazilian’s first chance to take to the pitch with his team mates in 2008. The Green-Whites sought out the fifth placed side in the Croatian league to test their strength and after just 12 minutes, Hajduk striker Verpakovskis made it very clear, in front of a 12,500 strong crowd, that his side were taking this particular friendly just as seriously as Werder were. Luckily for Thomas Schaaf’s men, the powerful header just missed the target.

Werder survived the first test and impressed with a concentrated and determined display : “The circumstances were difficult here. The surface was heavy and slippery. It was hard to combine passes but still we got into the game well”, analysed Thomas Schaaf early on in the game. It was the skiddy pitch that was to lead to the guests opening goal. Ivan Klasnic’s marker lost his footing and the Croatian international slotted home to make it 1:0 for Werder (14’). It was an important moment for the man playing away at home: “That was something special for me. After my operation I played my first game against my ex-club St Pauli, then I made my full comeback against Cottbus of all teams, they were the last side I played against before I became ill. Now here in Split, where I made my international debut for Croatia I score again. Fate has played a role here for sure”, believes Klasnic. It must have been a very special moment for the Werder striker as the Slit fans celebrated with him!!

The local fans wouldn’t get to celebrate a goal from their own side until after the break. Werder were apparently still mentally enjoying their half time tea as Vusic levelled the scores (48’). It was a goal that could surely have been hindered by a more regular Bremen defence but the red card for Naldo had thrown a cat amongst the pigeons: “The red card was not at all good for the flow of the match, especially as we hoped to work some things out ahead of the Dortmund game”, explained Klaus Allofs. Naldo’s fate was sealed after just 27 minutes when the referee blew for a professional foul on Verpakovskis. What the ref missed was the fact that the striker had in fact tripped himself on the way to goal. “I made absolutely no contact with my opponent – the card was totally unnecessary”, said Naldo after seeing the card which would affect the game distinctly.

The second period saw many and regular changes which included the return of Patrick Owomoyela and Pierre Wome for the Green-Whites. The Croatian side took the lead from the penalty spot with just eight minutes to go – Bartolovic hammering home to make it 2:1 for the home side but with just two minutes on the clock, Hugo Almeida planted the ball in the back of the net from close range and the game finished in a 2:2 draw. Thomas Schaaf summed up by saying: “We are not going to try make that sound like a good game of football. It was nothing special but we had the right attitude and I’d like to see that continue.”
