Werder Bremen and German international Torsten Frings will make his return to the pitch this Saturday.

Werder Bremen and German international Torsten Frings will make his return to the pitch this Saturday. The ‘Winter-Cup’ mini tournament in Dusseldorf will see Frings back on the ball after a three month injury lay-up. Following Thursday evenings training session Frings said: “I was involved in almost the entire preparation programme and have absolutely no problems now. I will play my first game on Saturday. It will be my first involvement on the pitch for quite some time and I’m really looking forward to it. I have been working towards that in training for over a month now and I was very active during the winter break too”, claimed the 31 year old who has no doubts about making a successful return: “I’m not worried at all about something going wrong, if I was even slightly unsure, I would not participate. I could have achieved my fitness earlier but I wanted to allow some time to meet the plans of the trainers and doctors and we had time during the winter break. I’m very happy with how everything has gone”, admitted Frings to WERDER.TV. The midfield engine made his last appearance for Werder on the 11th match day of the season against Schalke 04 (27.10.2008).

Werder’s vice-captain is optimistic about the sporting challenges that lie ahead for his side: “The team can achieve a lot, the squad is well manned. I just hope that we have more luck in the second round of games than we did last year. I’m quite convinced that will be the case, things have quietened down at the club now.”

Torsten Frings has absolutely no doubts in his mind as to which title he wants most: “I’d prefer to be German champion that UEFA Cup winner because that’s what I’m out there for training every day. For the championship you have to perform on a weekly basis and not just play every three weeks. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive to win the UEFA Cup. If we can win it then we should try to. There are a lot of games to play but we can master that with the squad of players that we have.”

As yet, the German international is not thinking about the European Championships but he does expect to be able to join the national squad in peek condition with no injuries to hinder his participation: “It’s such a long way away. I don’t want to think about that yet. Prior to the World Cup I suffered a broken leg and there I still managed to have a good tournament.”
