Werder’s Brazilian superstar Diego is neither in Bremen nor with his team mates at the training camp in Belek, Turkey, but he remains topic number one in German football. The midfield playmaker was again voted ‘Player of the Round’ by his peers in German football magazine ‘Kicker’ and he will be featured in ‘Sport Bild’ this Wednesday, with the focus on his winter period in Brazil. WERDER.DE spoke to Diego, who is currently working in a fitness room named ‘Refis’ in Sao Paulo under the guidance of Brazilian national team fitness expert Rozan.

It was an extremely optimistic Diego who explained in the last few days: “I’m putting in enduring long distance runs on the thread-mill, working hard on the exercise bike, going through special muscle building programmes, undertaking water gymnastics and massage. I’m doing well and feel a lot better than I did a few weeks ago.” Fans of the young star will be delighted to hear what hehad to say regarding his imminent comeback. Diego announced his plans and that he is ready to get back into the thick of things: “I will have to discuss the exact timing of my return to Bremen with manager Klaus Allofs and trainer Thomas Schaaf but I know that I will then be fit and prepared to give my all in training and matches.”

Klaus Allofs is equally optimistic: “I hope to see Diego back on the pitch for our friendly against Split on January 25th. Heproved in summer, having missed the training camp due to the Copa America, that he can find his form again very quickly.”

Coach Thomas Schaaf is also convinced of the success of his number 10’s rehabilitation programme as well as his extended stay in Brazil. The trainer has received constant updates on Diego’s progress and explained on the day before his men depart from Belek: “He’s doing well. His groin problems, and subsequent extended stay in Brazil, would appear to be improving. You have to remember he has played a lot of games and had to endure a lot of physical attention from opponents”, admitted Schaaf.

The Werder trainer is, on the whole, very satisfied with the preparations of his squad. Those players, who have needed to recharge their batteries in Turkey, have come through the programme better than in previous years: “We haven’t had all that many wounds to tend to”, acknowledged a happy coach who is well aware that slight injuries, such as to Leon Andreasen (heel) and Dusko Tosic (muscular problems), are unavoidable considering the extremity of the tasks. Christian Vander has recovered from flu to join the rest of his colleagues for the final spurt in Turkey.

Schaaf is not only satisfied with the work completed in Belek but also with the development of players who had to remain behind in Bremen. Patrick Owomoyela, Peter Niemeyer, Kevin Artmann (all ankle injuries), Clemens Fritz, Amaury Bischoff (both recovering after groin operations), Sebastian Boenisch (recovering after knee-op) and Pierre Wome ( groin problem) have all been going through individual rehabilitation programmes: “There are positive signs coming from all of them about the improvements they are making and they are all on the road to recovery”, reported Schaaf who knows that one or the other of those will be rejoining full team training pretty soon.
