The tournament, in which Werder Bremen will begin their campaign this Thursday, got under way on Tuesday evening with the opening game between FC Schalke 04 and SC Freiburg. The highly renowned Bundesliga club put on an impressive performance and eventually beat their second division opponents 3:1 (2:0) despite being a man down after just 30 minutes with Levan Kobiashvili seeing red for a professional foul.
The goals were scored by Ivan Rakitic (13’) from a free-kick, Peter Lovenkrands (26’) and Soren Larsen (79’) for the blues with Dennis Aogo grabbing the odd goal for SC Freiburg (49’).
This Thursday evening, 10.01.2008, Werder Bremen will take on SC Freiburg (6:35pm cet) before facing Bundesliga rivals Schalke on Saturday, 12.01.2008 (6:05pm cet). All of the games in the tournament will be broadcast live by German sport channel DSF.
