Werder Bremen began their winter preparations for the Bundesliga re-start on Thursday without the Brazilian duo of Naldo and Diego. Whilst Naldo fell foul to a flight delay and landed later in the evening in Bremen, Diego will not be available to the Green-Whites until mid-January: “He is being put through a specialised training programme by the physio of the Brazilian national team to help with a groin problem that had caused him difficulties right through the first half of the season”, explained trainer Thomas Schaaf who went on to say that the 22 year old will not participate in the Belek training camp. The trainer added: “This was a wish from the player which we chose to grant him. At the end of the day he played almost the whole year straight through and has had to take a lot of knocks.” The absence of the midfielder doesn’t really worry the coach too much: “Diego has proven that he can find his playing form very quickly. I don’t see any danger of him missing the Dortmund game.”

That particular game is becoming a realistic goal for Torsten Frings too. The German international took part in the afternoon fitness test with the rest of his team mates: “If there is still a ticket for the training camp available then I’d very much like to travel with the team”, quipped Frings who will undergo an individual training programme initially in Belek. “I intend to rejoin the rest of the team mid-way through the month”, explained Werder’s midfield engine who got the go-ahead from the team doctor to begin the next stage of his return.

Both Peter Niemeyer and Patrick Owomoyela (ankle injuries) are hoping to receive the same news when they visit the team doctor on Thursday but both will have to wait a couple of days for detailed results. As soon as they get the all-clear they will be able to enter the next phase of recovery and join Sebastian Boenisch, who has been working hard on his comeback for several weeks since his knee operation.

Aaron Hunt, who is still recovering after a spout of angina, and Pierre Womé have also had to postpone their fitness tests. Both players went through a jogging programme in the afternoon with physio Stefan Wolters. The Cameroon international was able to complete the session but the young German front-man had to pull out early still feeling week after his illness. It was a similar fate that befell Amaury Bischoff who had to excuse himself from training at the last minute with a stomach bug.

Carlos Alberto returned to Bremen suffering from tonsil pain which meant his first appointment back in Germany wasn’t with the team on the pitch but at the doctors surgery. The coach expects the Brazilian to be fir to partake in the Turkish training camp but sees no hope for Clemens Fritz (groin-operation), Diego and Patrick Owomoyela, as well as Peter Niemeyer, Boubacar Sanogo (Africa-Cup) and Sebastian Boenisch. The situation has brough the coach back memories of the pre-season injury list: “It’s all just continuing as was!!”

The following group of players were able to take part in Thursday’s fitness tests: Frank Baumann, Per Mertesacker, Petri Pasanen, Dusko Tosic, Jurica Vranjes, Daniel Jensen, Leon Andreasen, Tim Wiese, Christian Vander, Nico Pellatz, Tim Borowski, Max Kruse, Boubacar Sanogo, Kevin Artmann, Kevin Schindler, Martin Harnik, Ivan Klasnic, Markus Rosenberg, Hugo Almeida, John Jairo Mosquera and Torsten Frings.
