In the round of the last 32 teams in the UEFA Cup, Werder Bremen have been drawn against SC Braga. The draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday 21.12.2007. The first leg of the tie will take place on either Wednesday, 13.02.2008 or Thursday, 14.02.2008 at the Weser Stadium in Bremen. The return leg in Portugal will be played on Thursday, 21.02.2008.

Should Werder make it through to the last 16 they will take on the winners of the game between Glasgow Rangers and Panathinaikos Athens.

First of all though, the Green-Whites will have to see off the challenge of the Portuguese. The side, trained by Manuel Machado were in Bayern Munich’s UEFA Cup qualifying group and will know just what to expect from German opposition. In the game at the Municipal-Stadium in Braga they managed to gain a point in a 1:1 draw with the Bundesliga side. In the Portuguese ‘B-Win Liga’, Braga are currently in sixth place and recently progressed to the next round of their national cup with a 3:2 win against Camacha.

Reactions to the draw:

Thomas Schaaf:

“It will be a very interesting tie against SC Braga. They showed in the group phase against Bayern Munich just how tricky an opponent they can be and they caused Bayern a lot of problems that night. We should be warned, we can expect a very special atmosphere at the stadium between the mountain rocks in Braga. I know the stadium from my visit there with the U21’s last year.

Should we make it through, we have even tougher tests awaiting us in the next round but for now let’s concentrate on this round and Braga.”

Klaus Allofs:

“It’s a tough draw but certainly doable for our team. We can look forward to a very interesting game as it’s a team we have never played against. Bayern played against them so the fans will be aware of just how attractively they play and how tough the task is. Should we progress then there are some real tough opponents awaiting us with either Rangers or Panathinaikos. It’s quite alright in my books that we play at home first.”

Jürgen L. Born:

“A good draw. We have the chance to pull away from Portugal in the national rating. There are two direct games between German and Portuguese opponents. We won’t be underestimating our opponents – we know Portuguese sides are strong. There are still three of them in the competition.

With Diego and Almeida, we have two players who know all about Portuguese football and maybe they can give us a few pointers.”

Frank Baumann:

“Braga are definitely beatable. We will need to get a good result at home to set us up for the away leg. I watched their game against Bayern, they are a technically good side. I’m quite sure we’ll progress to the next round.”

Jurica Vranjes:

“We can be satisfied with the result of the draw. We could have been faced with a more difficult opponent. We should be able to beat Braga, I follow the Portuguese league and am convinced of our qualities. Such teams suit us.”

Clemens Fritz:

“Every team who makes it to this stage of the competition deserves to be taken seriously but despite that, we are favourites going into the game and we should be able to beat Braga.”

Martin Harnik:

“I’m looking forward to the game. Roland Linz is a striker there and I know his from the Austrian national team. It won’t be easy but it’s a doable task.”

Kevin Schindler:

“We are going into the game as favourites but we won’t underestimate a technically good Portuguese side. I’m really looking forward to the match.”
