After a long journey with numerous hic-cups, several pallets of Werder Bremen sportsware have finally reached Afghanistan. Werder boss Klaus-Dieter Fischer sees the it as “Our little bit to help.” It was a very special surprise for the on hand assistants, a group of German police officers, to receive equipment of such quality and in such amounts. “Three complete teams have been kitted out with winter jackets, rain jackets, vests, sweatshirts, short and long trousers as well as gloves”, explained the officers, who along with their official tasks of assisting the Afghanistan police in their reconstruction efforts, have been doing their bit for sport in the country.

One of the police officers has become an honourable referee, taking charge of games in three Afghanistan leagues whilst others have built up a football community with locals in the city of Kabul. “The players from Afghanistan are absolutely delighted and of course very proud of their new look”; explained officer Dirk Fütterer in an e-mail from Kabul and went on: “It’s especially fitting that we should receive winter clothing, the winter here in Kabul is long and cold.” The moment that the teams took to the pitch to face each other under the shadow of the Hindukusch may have seemed strange but inspiring at the same time.

The training gear from the Weser has gone to aide others in need too. The security personnel who protect the aid-workers and have to spend their time outside in the cold on watch have also received winter and rain jackets. The leftover sports-ware was allotted to the remaining police officers by their colleagues and the €400 made on the sale was also donated to an orphanage in the Afghanistan capital.

The news from Kabul is yet more reason for those responsible at Werder Bremen to ensure the project continues. For one and a half years now, Werder have been sending sports-ware to needy recipients in 18 different countries.
