At 1:53pm, with a 30 minute delay, Real Madrid’s plane touched down in Bremen ahead of the Champions League clash with Werder. Robinho, Cannavaro, van Nistlerooy &Co. can book their place in the round of the last sixteen of the competition when they face Werder at the Weser Stadium. The Spanish giants German coach Bernd Schuster was joined at the pre-match press conference by goalkeeper Iker Casillas who remarked: “We just need one point to secure our spot in the next round but we will be doing all in our power to win the match. If we can do that then we won’t be under such pressure against Lazio.” The coach himself added: “We are looking to decide things on Wednesday, then we won’t need to worry against the Lazio game.”

There is absolutely no fear that the Madrid side will be underestimating the second placed side i the Bundesliga. Statistics alone show that Real have won 21 times in Germany. The Real coach has less positive memories of the Green-Whites though: “When I think about Werder I can only ever remember getting a hiding there. That was during the Otto Reheagel reign and back then there was little to take from Bremen. I hope that’s different tomorrow.”

The visitors won’t be letting the personnel situation in Bremen cloud their vision of the task in hand. Bernd Schuster commented: “Bremen have had to deal with that situation right from the first game of the season and have again and again shone in spite of their predicament. So often they have been without important players but take a look at the Bundesliga table – they are right up there at the top. We know it won’t be easy no matter who lines out for them.”

On the subject of the absence of playmaker and Brazilian international Diego through suspension, Schuster was honest without gloating: “I would have preferred to see him on the pitch. You want to see players like that on the ball and not in the stand.” The Real coach sees Werder as a tough nut to crack despite the loss of Diego, Frings and Wiese: “It’s neither the game of our lives for us or Bremen but it is an important match. Both teams want to achieve something and that will do the game good”, concluded the former German international.
