There seems to be simply no end to Werder’s injury problems. In training on Monday, goalkeeper Tim Wiese suffered a muscle injury which will keep him out of Wednesday evening’s vital Champions League clash with Real Madrid: “We just got the message this afternoon. Tim trained right till the end of the session yesterday and thought everything would be alright. This morning the injury proved to more serious than initially expected. We’ll have to wait and see how long he will be out of action”, explained coach Thomas Schaaf at the pre-match press conference.
The 26 year old will be replaced between the posts on Wednesday night by number two keeper Christian Vander. It’s nothing new for the 27 year old who stood in for Werder in the Champions League against Olympiakos Piräus: “I really don’t want to say too much about the situation right now. I’d prefer to relax and concentrate on the match”, admitted the keeper ahead of the big game.
Christian Vander has the support of his team mates to rely on: “Of course Tim is a hefty loss but we have a very capable replacement. We have to accept this for what it is. Christian has always done his job well”, insisted Tim Borowski and the coach is equally convinced of the former Bochum keepers talent: “Christian knows that we have faith in him and we know he will repay us for that trust. We are sure he will be a strong last man tomorrow.”
Despite their injury worries, Werder Bremen are looking to pick up a win against the Spanish giants in order to improve the Green-Whites chances of progressing to the next round of the competition. The self-confidence gained from nine games without defeat in the Bundesliga should hopefully inspire Thomas Schaaf’s men: “We respect but don’t fear Real. They are a great team with many great individual players. We will present ourselves with a good team tomorrow that is determined to win the tie. We still have the chance to progress but to do so we will have to perform better than we have in the other Champions League games this season”, demanded Tim Borowski, who was joined by Per Mertesacker. The defender said: “We know that we can improve our points tally tomorrow, there is no question about that. We haven’t yet achieved what we set out to achieve.”
Trainer Thomas Schaaf is convinced that his team are all very well focused on the task in hand: “We know that the lads have high hopes and are determined to perform well. For us, everything will need to gel if we are to perform at the level we intend to.”
The Werder trainer nominated the following 18 man squad for the Real Madrid clash: Christian Vander, Nico Pellatz, Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Frank Baumann, Jurica Vranjes, Clemens Fritz, Markus Rosenberg, Dusko Tosic, Aaron Hunt, Boubacar Sanogo, Carlos Alberto, Daniel Jensen, Tim Borowski, Kevin Schindler, Per Mertesacker, Kevin Artmann, Martin Harnik.
