Werder Bremen's injury problems just refuse to let up. On Tuesday the news came through that the injury picked up last Saturday by Hugo Almeida , whilst in action for Portugal in a Euro 2008 qualifier, is more serious than originally thought. The striker was substituted in the 68th minute against Armenia with what was deemed to be a muscular problem but has since been diagnosed as a muscle sinew tear. "It happened in a sprint just before I was substituted", explained Almeida, who had to break the news to his coach Thomas Schaaf on Monday.
The Werder trainer was anything but pleased by the report from Portugal: "That is tragic for Hugo that he should pick up an injury in a game that he won for his team. His loss is a big one for us, he has the best striking record at the moment." The coach agreed with Portuguese trainer Felipe Scolari that Almeida should remain with his national team until Wednesday. Schaaf explained: "Hugo has all the medical assistance he needs right there where he is."
The front man will definitely miss out against Energie Cottbus at the weekend and his availablity for the up-coming matches against Real Madrid and Hamburg SV is in serious doubt.
