The crisis at Lazio was topic number one at the pre-match press conference on Monday evening ahead of the Champions League clash in Rome. Following a run of defeats in the ‘Serie A’, the Italians are hoping to turn things around with a win in the Champions League. A draw against Real Madrid in front of their own fans gave the side a boost and now the plan is to pick up their first win: “In the Champions League, Lazio have often managed to do well against top teams. We are proud and tactically capable of doing that again”, explained Rome coach Delio Rossi.

The coach considers Werder Bremen to be one of those top sides: “They are very experienced and have achieved a lot. It’s not a problem for them that they will be missing Frings. They have a replacement in Baumann, who isn’t exactly been thrown in at the deep end from the youth team – he’s the club captain.”

Rossi is hoping to see his side pull together to be successful at a time of crisis: “We need to get through this the way a family would. There are difficult times in families too when everyone needs to pull together.” The exact eleven that will need to start that task on Wednesday evening is as yet unclear. The Italians will have to wait until shortly before kick-off for the go-ahead on striker Pandev who has been suffering with a thigh problem. Clear is that Mauri will not be involved: “His absence will mean we need to switch from a 4-3-1-2 to a 4-4-2 system, which we also used against Werder in Bremen.”

The trainer believes his team will have no problems dealing with the change tactically, but psychologically it could be a more difficult task: “The problems we had are psychological. We could do with some luck. We’ve had some bad luck, conceding easy goals. We need one of them in our favour now.” Maybe that will work out for them against Bremen on Wednesday, but maybe not until the next game: “That’s the great thing about football. If you have a bad day at the Olympic Games, you have to wait four years for your next chance. In football it can all be put to rights in three days.”
