The pick of the ties in the round of the last sixteen of the DFB Cup is, without a doubt the clash between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen. At the same time the Werder reserves will face the challenge of current German champions VfB Stuttgart. The draw was made on Thursday evening in Volendam, Holland ahead of the women’s European Championship qualifier between Hollland and Germany (1:0 for Germany). The games will be played on 29th/30th of January 2008.
The two clubs have some DFB Cup history against each other. The last meeting of the two took place at the same stage of the competition on Saturday, 07.11.1992 at the Weser Stadium, a game which finished in a 2:0 defeat for the home side. Green-White fans will also have bitter memories of the 1989 cup final which finished 4:1 for the Black and Yellows.
The Werder reserves were rewarded for their win against St. Pauli with a third round visit from German champions VfB Stuttgart. The two met at the same stage of the tournament back on Wednesday, 13.10.1999 in a game that finished in a very narrow 1:0 win for the Bundesliga side. Previously, on Friday, 16.08.1991, the Green-Whites reserves crashed out of the second round of the cup to a 5:1 thrashing by Stuttgart.
Reaction to the draw:
Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf:
“We have disitinct memories still of our recent Bundesliga meeting – we fell apart. Now we can sho that we are capable of much more than that. It’s a really great draw for the U23 side. The young lads will have a great stage to present their talents against the league title holders.”
Werder general manager Klaus Allofs:
„We had been hoping for a home tie but that wasn’t to be. It’s no easy task to take a win away from Dortmund. We have a score to settle after our last game there. I’m delighted for the reserves with the draw they got. Everyone was really wishing for such an opponent. They can just play their game against Stuttgart and maybe cause another upset as they did against FC St. Pauli.”
Werder full-back Clemens Fritz:
“That is a really tough challenge. We have some making up to do after the 0:3 defeat in Dortmund this season. They are two very attractive ties for us and the amateur side.”
U23 coach Thomas Wolter:
“We are satisfied with the result of the draw. It’s not clear yet as to whether we’ll play on ‘Platz 11’ or at the Weser Stadium but we are looking forward to the visit of the champions. In 1999 / 2000 we had the pleasure of a visit from Stuttgart. We played on ‘Platz 11’ back then and narrowly lost to a Hosny goal. The last couple of days were exciting but now that the draw is made we can forget the DFB Cup for a while and concentrate on our league tasks.”
Vice-youth manager Björn Schierenbeck:
“A first division side and then the champions to boot, you can’t get a more attractive draw. I can remember our last cup tie with Stuttgart. It was a really close game which we lost to a single set piece goal. We played on ‘Platz 11’ then and I can imagine that will be the situation again this time around. It was clear to see against Köln that it is the ideal place for such games.”
Press director Tino Polster:
“Dortmund against Werder is definitely the tie of the round. For the sake of the fans we are hopeful that this game will be broadcast live. The state channels ZDF and ARD can’t ignore that one and they have the chance to show two live games in the next round.”
