A concentrated second half performance in the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday, 31.10.2007 was enough to see Werder Bremen cruse past MSV Duisburg with a 4:0 win which means the Werder professionals will join their reserves in the last sixteen of the competition.

A concentrated second half performance in the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday, 31.10.2007 was enough to see Werder Bremen cruse past MSV Duisburg with a 4:0 win which means the Werder professionals will join their reserves in the last sixteen of the competition. John Jairo Mosquera made his debut for the Green-Whites on the night and made an immediate impression, scoring the fourth goal for his side.

Thomas Schaaf’s men started the game in unusually subdued fashion and had their attempts to attack abruptly stopped by an aggressive yellow Duisburg defensive wall. At times the visitors used rather un-fair means to disrupt the Werder flow with Diego often the focus of MSV’s attention. Another aggressive foul left Boubacar Sanogo in need of treatment. The Ivory Coast international made a brief return to the pitch but in the 34th minute the striker was forced out of the game and had to be replaced by Markus Rosenberg.

Focused Werder flatten MSV

Trainer Rudi Bommer’s eleven had more than just their physical presence to offer and displayed their ability more than once with quick counter attacking football. The Green-White’s back line were caught wanting more than once by the visitors but, for all their efforts, the visitors failed to find a way through. It was the home side who looked most likely to do some damage and their first clear opening came as a Diego free-kick fell to the feet of Leon Andreasen who in turn hammered the ball against the crossbar (30). The woodwork came to Werder’s rescue just three minutes later after a Tiffert header beat the keeper.

It was a very different looking eleven that took to the pitch for Thomas Schaaf after the break. There were no further personnel changes made to the side but their will to win was clear for all to see as they prepared to show Duisburg who was boss. The hosts looked solid at the back and drove the ball forward effectively through Diego and Andreasen. It was clearly only a matter of time before the Green-Whites would be rewarded for their efforts.

Hugo Almeida began a move with a well played cross field pass which found Andreasen. Th e Dane played to Diego on the edge of the box and the Brazilian turned and struck goal wards only to see his shot rebound off the post but Tim Borowski was perfectly placed to convert the loose ball and put Werder in the lead – 1:0 (59’).

Mosquera seals the deal

With a goal to the good, the home side looked all the more confident and whilst the visitors failed to produce a further notable attack for the rest of the game, the hosts rolled into action. In the 68th minute, Hugo Almeida finished off a lightening counter attack to make it 2:0, leaving MSV keeper Tom Starke looking somewhat red-faced.

Diego bowed out of the tie in the 71st minute and Andreasen and Borowski combined to close the gap in the centre. A horrendous defensive mistake by Duisburg’s Frnando set up Werder’s third. The central defenders attempted header back to his keeper fell too short and Markus Rosenberg burst through to chip the ball over the stranded keeper – 3:0.

There was a premier at the Weser Stadium then in the 80th minute as John Jairo Mosquera made his debut in Green-White. The Columbian took just seven minutes to endear himself to the Werder faithful as the young striker took on a perfect pass from Andreasen on the edge of the box and curled it into the far corner to make the final score 4:0. It took time for the home side to settle on the night but when they did, they did so in style.
