Aaron Hunt is the creative free spirit, offensive leader and box-to-box player for Werder head coach Robin Dutt. And the deputy captain has plenty of freedom on the pitch. Werder's number 14 is the only player on Bremen's squad that has full freedom of decision from the coach on the pitch. Hunt however does not rest on his laurels.
As everyone knows, statistics do not lie. And Dutt looks at one stat after the Bundesliga match at Schalke 04 to describe Hunt's "amazing performance". Hunt ran 12.25 kilometres during the match - more than any other player in the contest. He also was the most effective tackler and passer for Bremen in the game, winning 60 percent of his 23 challenges - a much higher percentage than other playmakers in the Bundesliga such as Mkhitaryan, Maxim and company.
The Werder veteran, however, does not really receive the public appreciation that he deserves. "Aaron's performance once again was unbelievable for an offensive player. He was tops in all ratings. He even won the most challenges, even though he plays on offence. Usually only defensive players have such ratings. Every other player would be hyped for weeks for such a performance. Aaron kind of goes under the radar. Often he only is praised when he scores a goal or sets one up," said Dutt.
Hunt was pleased to hear the appreciation from Dutt during the national team break and remains focused despite the criticism. "I don't really worry too much about this topic since I can assess my performance pretty good myself. The coach's opinion also counts a lot," said Hunt, who offered a reason for the strong running statistics. "I think I have maybe taken a small step forward in the last couple weeks and feel really good at the moment. But the whole team is putting up good ratings at the moment in regards to the number of kilometres."
The playmaker really doesn't want to talk too much about side issues. Much more important is Werder picking up three points in their next home match against Mainz 05 on 24 November 2013 at 5:30 p.m.
