Aaron Hunt has been part of the SV Werder professional squad for the past 10 years and is currently the longest-serving of the Green-Whites. Werder manager of sport Thomas Eichin confirmed Thursday afternoon that Hunt declined Bremen's offer for a contract extension.
"Aaron has a great appreciation among us and is an important part of the squad," said head coach Robin Dutt at Friday's official press conference. "But we fully understand that a footballer in the best age of 27 would like to orientate himself differently. That is an entirely normal process in professional football," added Dutt.
The reactions of the deputy captain's teammates were calm. "Aaron has been here an entirely and really did a lot for the club. You can only respect his decision," said teammate Zlatko Junuzovic. Neither ‘Juno' nor Dutt expect a negative reaction from the Werder fans about Hunt's decision. "There is absolutely no reason for that. Recently, the Bremen fans have really recognised that Aaron ran an extremely high number of kilometers, scored important goals and thereby secured us some points. The Bremen crowd have proven a lot of flair in the recent weeks and months. I am certain that they will understand Aaron's decision," said Dutt.
Hunt is Werder's most successful scorer in the current season with four goals and four assists. The midfielder will have good memories of the first half match against Hannover as he converted a penalty for his first goal of the season in helping Werder to a 3-2 victory and three important points.
