When the Werder players came into the changing rooms after the final training Friday, some of them had to orientate themselves on the new training schedule. Head coach Robin Dutt had announced a change in the procedure before Bundesliga home matches.
After talking it over with the team, Dutt is striking the usual overnight in team quarters at the Bremen Park Hotel and is letting players have their own responsibility the night before the match. "We talked it over with the leaders of the team and it was accepted positively. I think it's good to build up a certain anticipation ahead of the match. When you are in the hotel too early and spend the entire afternoon, evening and whole morning before the match there then the anticipation kind of lets up. I did that in Freiburg and had a good experience with it," said Dutt.
But that doesn't mean an earlier end to the day or less of a team sense for Werder's players. Just the opposite is the case. The schedule calls for a collective opponent analysis after the final training at about 5:30 p.m. and then a collective dinner. They the players will head home by around 9 p.m. The game day will begin as usual with a collective breakfast at 9 a.m. at Park Hotel.
The players welcomed the new procedure. "Honestly, I am happy that I can spend the night before the game in my own bed. That's where you sleep best. We players think the idea is good and will certainly justify the responsibility given. Personally, I will prepare for the match just as professionally at home as at Park Hotel," said team captain Clemens Fritz.
